“Being a teacher was my profession. Being a flower gardener is my hobby. Being an artist is who I am.”
- Audrey Holrod
Audrey grew up in the Niagara Falls and Hamilton areas. At an early age she was fascinated with art and consistently created drawings throughout her life. She studied in various universities across Canada and the U.S.A. and attained a B.A and M.A. degrees. She graduated from Teacher’s College and began a career in teaching French. She worked and resided in Hanover, Ontario.
After her retirement in 1978, she devoted herself full time to her artwork. Travelling to Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and France, she created pieces in oils, charcoals and soft pastels in various themes ranging from landscape to abstract. However, the most predominant theme within Audrey’s work was her continuous experimentation with manipulating Polaroid photographs and pushing the traditional concepts to pure inventions she discovered.
Audrey’s work has been shown in cities across Canada and she garnered over 50 awards in juried art shows. With over 34 solo exhibitions, Audrey has gained recognition for her work across the country and internationally. Her work has been published in Education Forum and Canadian Camera. In 1995, Polaroid Canada acquired 4 of her works. Audrey’s vivid pieces can be found in collections all over the world.
Audrey was represented by Gallery de Boer-Fine Art & Jazz in Owen Sound, Ontario before she passed away in March 2010. Her dedication toward her art will always be inspirational.
